Ditch Your Handbags For Good

Ditch Your Handbags For Good

Fall is here, but my favorite trend of the season so far has nothing to do with Fall. In fact, it has everything to do with the handbags and purses that we as ladies carry around with us. For the past month, I have been ditching my handbags (totes, satchels, hobo bags) in favor of…. backpacks.

The idea of carrying around backpacks isn’t new. Heck, even carrying backpacks as an adult isn’t a new concept. We’ve all seen that category on the Handbags section of our favorite retailer that says “Backpacks”, yet we never click it. Maybe it has something to do with how backpacks just remind us of grade school (who didn’t have a JanSport backpack during grade school?), or maybe it has to do with how there are just too many cute handbags to choose from, so the thought of venturing outside the box never occured to us.

Recently, during Kate Spade’s latest surprise sale, I took a chance and snagged myself a super cute back on sale, just to test out whether I would actually like the comments nvenience of a backpack more than my handbags. The verdict? I LOVE IT!

Here is my advice and my top tips and tricks for shopping why backpacks are amazing and how to choose your perfect backpack.

  1. One of the key points of importance when shopping for a good backpack that looks chic and doesn’t make you look like you’re headed back to grade school is choosing the style of backpack you like. I have found that my favorite style of backpacks tends to mimic my favorite styles of handbags. I’m a huge fan of structured bags with clean lines and an overall minimalist look. The Kate Spade Somerville Road Megyn backpack that I have been carrying everywhere has all of the elements I would typically pick in a totebag: structured, clean lines, and a classic color.
  2. Choosing your perfect backpack size is oh-so-important. Whenever I’m browsing through a store in person, I always like to try on different sizes of bags to gauge what looks the best on me. Some sites even have a handy tool that utilizes your height and weight to give you a basic silhouette of your body type holding one particular bag (click “Size Me Up”). Personally I recommend picking a backpack that would measure to be around a half (at most, three-fourths) of your entire torso. Picking a backpack size too big is detrimental to more petite girls because it can swallow you up (I know it does for me!), and if you’re not petite, a backpack too big can still look disproportional.
  3. I am not a doctor, but I have personally felt that I have gotten significant health benefits since switching to a backpack. When I had a shoulder bag or was carrying a tote bag, I found myself slouching to one side and developing increased aches and pains on the side that I was carrying my bag. When I switched it up and carried my bag on the other side, the bags kept slipping, and it felt weird to carry my shoulder bag there. Using a backpack allows me to distribute the weight evenly across both of my shoulders. It has personally helped me gain better posture!

I am linking below some of styles of backpacks that I either have or have been eyeing below. If you’re still on the fence, I recommend choosing something from an affordable retailer such as H&M or a backpack from Lauren Conrad’s LC Lauren Conrad line. If you love the backpack trend after trying these out, then jump right in to some of the higher-end brands!

I hope you all enjoyed this post! I love you all!

XOXO,
Claire
